The Supreme Court declared Aam Aadmi Party as the winner of Chandigarh’s mayoral elections. After thoroughly examining the results, the supreme court ordered the prosecution of Anil Masih for the misdemeanor of intentionally defacing eight ballot boxes, which were in the favor of AAP candidate Kuldeep Kumar. The court also issued the show cause notice to Anil Masih.
Bhartiya Janata party (BJP), India’s ruling party had won Chandigarh’s mayoral elections against Aam Aadmi party on 30th January. However, after the examination of Supreme court, the Aam Aadmi party was declared winner after the court found out the “malpractices” of Anil Masih.
The court noted the eight votes declared as “invalid” by the returning officer have been treated as valid. Thus, making Kuldeep Kumar as the winner with 20 votes. The Supreme court has now given the time of three weeks to Anil Masih to explain the reason behind his actions and why criminal actions should not be initiated against him.
The supreme court bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud declared Aam Aadmi party candidate Kuldeep Kumar as the validly elected winner candidate for the post of Mayor of the Union Territory of Chandigarh. The court’s decision has led to the overturning of the controversial election of Chandigarh. This decision by the court has emphasized the importance of upholding the integrity of electoral process.
