On 12th May, BMC demolished dozens of slums in order to widen the road leading to Gorai jetty in Borivali. The demolition took place on Friday morning. As per the sources, more than 300 slums were demolished by the BMC on Friday morning. The slums were part of the Mahatma phule nagar. According to BMC, those slums were established in 1995.
On Malharrao Kulkarni Road, 133 persons who were qualified for rehabilitation have been provided PAP dwellings in a building. Whereas others who weren’t qualified for rehabilitation were left homeless.
According to the sources, the notice of the demolition was put up on the 9th May 2023 in which the last date of vacating was 8th May, 2023. “The action was taken to boost tourism in the area and open it for traffic” said BMC by justifying their actions. However this demolition process by BMC has left dozens of people homeless.
The similar incident occurred two months ago in the Naleshwar Nagar area of Virar (East), where dozens of people went homeless after the slums were demolished. The situation got heated there as people started pelting stones on the authorities. Soon, police had to do lathi charge in order to control the situation. However, the authorities in Borivali kept the situation under control hence preventing the further escalation.
