Remembering Rajeev Gandhi on his death anniversary!

Rajiv Gandhi, was assassinated on May 21, 1991 Rajiv Gandhi was the second Indian prime minister to be assassinated after his mother Indira Gandhi. The Prime minister was assassinated by a woman suicide bomber.

Rajeev Gandhi studied at Welham Prep In Dehra Dun. He went to Trinity College in Cambridge and from there, joined Imperial College (London).Rajiv Gandhi had a passion for music – Western and Hindustani classical – and photography.

 

Rajiv Gandhi met Sonia Gandhi at Cambridge. In 1968, he married to Sonia Gandhi moved into the house of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Rajiv Gandhi had to enter politics after the death of his more ambitious brother Sanjay Gandhi in a plane crash in 1980. Rajiv Gandhi stood in elections from his brother’s sworn seat Amethi. He became the president of the Indian Youth Congress sppn after his brother in 1981.

Rajiv Gandhi is remembered as a revolutionary politician who took big steps to facilitate India’s IT revolution.

Rajiv Gandhi was busy election-campaigning for acquiring the second tenure in southern states of India. On 21 May, after campaigning in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, his next stop was Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. About two hours after arriving in Madras (now Chennai), Gandhi was driven by motorcade in a white Ambassador car to Sriperumbudur, stopping along the way at a few other election campaigning venue. When Rajiv reached a campaign rally in Sriperumbudur, he left his car and began walking towards the welcome stage where he was to deliver a speech. Along the way, he was surrounded by many people and in between well-wishers, Indian National Congress workers and school children.

The assassin, A lady , approached and greeted him. She then bent down to touch his feet and detonated an RDX explosive-laden belt tucked below her dress at exactly 10:10 PM.Gandhi, his assassin and 14 others were killed in the explosion , along with 43 others who were seriously injured in attack. The assassination was caught on film by a local photographer, whose camera and film was found intact at the site despite him also dying in the blast.

The only things were obtained by his dead body were half torn pant and shoes.
