Meerut, Uttar Pradesh: Burglars dug a 10-foot tunnel through a drain to steal jewellery worth lakhs of rupees from a store.
When the proprietor of the jewellery showroom went to the store on Tuesday morning to open it for business, he saw a tunnel going through a drain and into the store. The thieves broke down bricks and mud from the flimsy drain boundary, according to the police, in order to gain access to the store.
The thieves made off with jewellery valued in lakhs of rupees, but the exact amount has not yet been determined, according to the police.
Members of the Meerut Bullion Traders Association arrived at the showroom as word of the sensational robbery spread to express their displeasure with the city’s law and order situation. The traders claimed that this is the city’s fourth instance of this kind of robbery.
Soon after the disturbance, two police officers arrived at the showroom. The shop’s owners refused to let the police officers inside, saying they needed a senior official’s presence to look into this robbery and several others that have allegedly occurred recently.
According to the police, a probe is being conducted to apprehend the robbers.
