The Churchgate-Virar suburban service that runs from Mumbai to its far western suburbs – the first public transit system of India – turned 156 years on Wednesday.With over 1,300 services in over 120 kms – running 24×7, Western Railway suburban trains cover almost the distance up to moon in one week.
was on 12 April 1867 that local services between Virar and Backbay (nearly 60 kms) on the western line started – 14 years after the first train service started between Boribunder and Thanna on 16 April 1853 on the central line.Then the Western Railway was known as the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway (BB&CI), while the Central Railway was known as Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIP).The Churchgate-Virar western line, however, is the first public transit system in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), that comprises Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban districts besides parts of Palghar, Thane and Raigad districts.

An EMU car shed has been built between Nalasopara and Virar which is the largest car shed in Asia. A repair shop for EMUs is situated at Mahalaxmi. There are also EMU car sheds at Mumbai Central and Kandivali.
