On Saturday night, Atiq Ahmed, a gangster-turned-politician and his brother Ashraf were shot dead by three assailants while being taken to a medical college in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh for a checkup. The attackers had posed as journalists to gain access to the politician and his brother. They shot both of them at point-blank range in the presence of several police personnel. The attackers were overpowered and caught by the police shortly after the incident.
The three assailants who killed Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were identified as Lavlesh Tiwari, Arun Maurya, and Sunny. They were small-time criminals who already had cases against them. Lavlesh Tiwari’s father stated that his son was a drug addict and that they had no information about how he reached Prayagraj.
During the attack, the assailants posed as journalists and shouted slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” after killing Atiq Ahmed and his brother. They were immediately overpowered and nabbed by the police after they carried out the attack.
According to the police, the assailants told them during the interrogation that they killed Atiq Ahmed and his brother to become famous. The motive behind the attack is still under investigation, and the police are looking into all possible angles. After the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a high-level investigation and instructed the formation of a three-member Judicial Inquiry Commission to look into the matter.
