Gangster turned Politician Anand Mohan Singh was released from Saharsa jail in Bihar in the early hours of Thursday. The Amendment in Bihar Governments prison rule resulted in his release and 26 other convicts. He was serving a life sentence in the 1994 murder of then Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah.
Earlier his release was scheduled for 7 am but to avoid the media, he was released at 4:30 am. Outside the main gate of Saharsa jail, hundreds of Anand’s fans had gathered to greet their beloved leader. He was nevertheless permitted to go by the back door and drive a lavish vehicle.
The manual of Jail was amended stating the release of 27 prisoners who have served 14 years or 20 years. Singh was on parole earlier to attend the engagement ceremony of his MLA son Chetan Anand. He returned to jail on Wednesday after the end of his parole.
On Wednesday, the state prison department released nearly 14 convicts from various jails of the state. Singh was from those 8 people who were supposed to be released.
The opposition is not very happy about the release of the former MP. Responding to all this, Anand Mohan said convicts from the Bilkis Bano case were also released under Bihar CM Nitish Kumar`s pressure. “In Gujarat also, some decisions have been taken under the pressure of RJD and Nitish Kumar, go and see that. Some people have been released and garlanded. Yes, I am pointing out to that case (Bilkis Bano case) only,” Singh told the media. “I have full sympathy for G Krishnaiah`s family. This episode ruined two families, that of Lovely Anand (his wife), and G Kishnaiah,” he added.
Former MP Anand Mohan Singh was put in jail under the charge of murdering Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah on December 5, 1994, in Muzaffarpur. The DM was dragged out of his car and lynched by a horde which was reportedly provoked by Anand Mohan Singh.
Anand Mohan was sentenced to death by a trial court in 2007. It was reduced to life imprisonment by the Patna High Court, a year later. He objected to the court’s verdict but no relief has been granted since 2007.
His son Chetan Anand is an RJD MLA from Bihar`s Sheohar and his wife Lovely Anand has been Lok Sabha MP.
