Match began at 1:30 pm, after Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl first. The main reason Sri Lanka chose to bowl is because the ground was flooded with dew on the eve of the match.
After the toss, Rohit Sharma said “We are happy to bat first. We would have liked to bowl as well, it’s a good challenge. The ground was flooded with dew yesterday. There will be times where we need to bowl under dew, we got to be ready for that with the World Cup around the corner. It’s about doing the basics right, it’s important to do things differently at times”.
The match began with India’s new opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, who were in the middle to begin the innings. Kasun Rajitha started the proceedings for Sri Lanka.
Just after 0.5 overs, Rohit Sharma scored four runs. Later, India scored 50 up in just 6.4 overs. Both Rohit and Gill weren’t holding back.
As boundaries continued to flow for team India, Sri Lanka skipper brought in Wanindu Hasaranga into the attack. Because of that, just 5 runs were scored off in the last two overs.
However, things began to change when Rohit Sharma brings up his 47th ODI fifty off just 41 balls. Rohit along with Shubman Gill gave India excellent start in this ODI series opener in Guwahati. Gill and Rohit continued to put pressure on Lanka, after 15 overs-Team India scored 102 runs.
Gill later survives LBW review from Sri Lanka, Dunith Wellalage tried to trap Shubham Gill, but umpire Anil Choudhary ruled in favour of the batter, because of that lankans went of the review. Replay showed that the ball hit the pad first, but the impact was umpire’s call and Gill had a lucky escape.
Later Shubham Gill scored his half century of his fifth ODI. After scoring half century, Gill directly scored a Hat-trick. Both India openers were toying with the Sri Lanka bowlers.
However, the happiness of the team India didn’t last that long when Shanaka trapped Shubham Gill right in front of the stumps for 70(60). Gill did not bother to go for the review as he was caught dead in front.
After Gill was out, Kohli stepped in. Kohli cracked his first 4 runs, an angled-in delivery from Darus Shanka and Virat read early. Soon, Rohit too scored total 80 runs. Team India scored 200n runs in just 27 overs.
De Silva got rid of Shreyas Iyer, while Kohli kept the scoreboard moving. After 34 overs, Team India scored 243 runs with the run rate of 6.94.
Kohli later scored six runs with one shot, resulting in completing his half century (50 runs).
After 40 overs, Team India scored 294 runs, later crossing 300-run mark in the 41st over.
Final 12 balls were left; people were hoping that Kohli will take India closer to 400 runs. However, their hopes were shattered when Kohli fell for 113, he got out trying to go for the runs. Kasun Rajitha got the wicket of Kohli.
After India’s batting, it was Lanka’s turn to bat. Sri Lanka scored only 93 runs after 20 overs with the Run rate of 4.9.
Sri Lanka was on the tough spot in today’s ODI match, after 30 overs, Lankans only scored 159 runs with the loss of 4 wickets. First Dhananjaya, then Nissanka got out from the match. It was Umran Malik who got the wicket of Nissanka. Later Chahal get his revenge by getting the wicket of Wanindu Hasaranga.
Later Lanka loses the match, while India wins the match by 67 runs.
Virat Kohli and Dasun Shanaka stole the limelight as India defeated Sri Lanka by 67 runs in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. Virat Kohli scored 113 off 87 balls in his 73rd international century, as India posted a formidable total of 373 for 7 against the guests, who ended their quota of 50 overs at 306 for 8, thanks to Dasun Shanaka’s unbeaten 108 off 88 balls. For India, Rohit Sharma (83) and Shubman Gill (70) laid a solid platform with a 143-run opening stand after Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first. Kasun Rajitha picked three wickets, but he leaked 88 runs in his 10-over spell. During Sri Lanka’s chase, Dasun Shanaka, Pathaum Nissanka (72) and Dhananjaya de Silva (47) showed good resilience but failed to avoid a defeat. Umran Malik was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 57.
