Buenos Aires was rocked by violent protests on Wednesday after a controversial economic reform bill was passed in the Argentinian senate with a slim majority. Javier Milei’s controversial economic bill which was narrowly approved by the Argentinian senate aims to revive Argentina’s crumbling economy by declaring a state of economic emergency, cutting pensions and watering down the labour rights.
After the controversial economic bill was passed, the streets of Buenos Aires were converted into a “battleground”, with demonstrators throwing petrol bombs, pelting stones and blazing up the cars. Soon, police fired several rubber bullets and tear gas to curb the violent protests outside the congress on Wednesday afternoon. Several opposition lawmakers, who were part of the protesting crowd were transferred to a nearby hospital after they were injured in the clash.
As per protestors, many Argentinians are against this controversial economic bill. One of the people opposing this bill is Alexiev Gandman, a popular figure from Disney’s Art Attack junior. As per Alexiev Gandman Argentina is going through a very big crisis. He pointed out Javier Milei as a president as a person who “prefers doing business and passing harmful laws”. Alexiev Gandman was one of thousands, protesting outside the congress against the controversial economic bill.
“I was there protesting. The new law that was approved takes away many rights from workers and worsens working conditions. These issues are fine to employers who hire employees under illegal conditions. It gives away the country’s natural resources to the companies that come to exploit them without paying taxes to Argentina. It’s a scandal. That’s why I went to complain. Because it does not give benefits to the people, it only takes them away.” said Alexiev Gandman, criticizing the controversial economic bill by pointing out that the controversial bill will worsen the conditions of the labourers and will benefit the ruthless companies.
Javier Milei’s controversial economic bill has met with nationwide criticism in Argentina. Milei, a far-right politician was elected as the president of Argentina amidst the severe economic crisis, a crisis which he is still struggling to tame after six months in the office. The annual inflation in Argentina is 300%, which has resulted in more than half Argentinians living under poverty.
