Ramesh Bais who was governor of Jharkhand until Sunday has been appointed as the new governor of Maharashtra, replacing Bhagat Singh Koshyari whose resignation has been accepted by President Droupadi Murmu. Koshyari’s exit comes following a recent controversy over his comment on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Bhagat Singh Koshyari resigned as the Governor of Maharashtra in February 2023, following widespread criticism of his comments on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and other historical figures. Under fire from the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), Koshyari expressed his desire to step down and spend the remainder of his life in reading, writing, and other activities.
He had also been involved in several run-ins with the MVA-led government over the appointment of 12 members to the state legislative council from the gubernatorial quota, which he never approved. The latest controversy surrounding Koshyari was about his remarks on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which triggered protests from the opposition parties and resulted in his eventual resignation.
