On Saturday, gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead while being escorted for medical treatment in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Atiq Ahmed had a criminal history, including charges related to murder, and his son had been killed in an encounter in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, earlier.
As a result of the incident, the Uttar Pradesh Government imposed Section 144 of the CrPC (Criminal Procedure Code) in all districts of the state on Sunday, which prohibits the assembly of more than four people in public places. This is a precautionary measure taken to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a high-level investigation into the matter and also instructed the formation of a three-member Judicial Inquiry Commission to look into the incident. The Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested three people in connection with the shooting, and further details are yet to be shared.
